That conchord of sound of keyboards and bellows, is the IT instrument again, if it ever was. More variable in style than stylish to wear, artists of all stripes strap on the squeezebox and make music of many genres: Folk, Zydeco, Retro Rock, Vallenato, Tango, Klezmer, Musette, Gawwali, Forró, Bachata, Balkans Russian Bluegrass, World Busker Punk, and Gypsy Gospel. Give it a squeeze.

Paul Simon - The Boy In The Bubble

These are the days of miracle and wonder

Paul Simon's album GRACELAND came out just after I moved to Paris. I had gotten my resume together and had learned enough formal French (since forgotten) to write letters requesting interviews as I was eager for employment. But it was August, and the city was deserted with no one in town to reply. What else could I do but wear my Walkman and take to the streets to wander around to get oriented, get lost, and get into mischief? This album became the soundtrack of my first year, especially the first months as it slowly dawned I me that I had absolutely no idea who I was or what I was doing. Simon's warm brotherly voice and the push of the accordion kept me moving as I tried to project the appearance confidence or at least a sense of direction. The album opens with this track, and I recall my route from the edges of the 18th arrondissement (not the cool bohemian parts, the part that looked like Queens near the Périphérique), past Gare du Nord, walking down through neighborhoods toward La Seine, over the Pont de la Concord to the bottom of Boulevard Saint-Germain where I somehow managed to swindle a job. Even today, whenever I hear this song, I see Paris.
