We've come a long way since Paul Simon's Graceland… There are so many amazing African artists infused with Western music and Western artists infused with African music.

MANU KATCHÉ - Slowing The Tides
Jaime Wolf

Drummer of the world

When Peter Gabriel hired Manu Katché, a drummer from the Ivory Coast to play on his So album in the mid-80s, it really was new & arresting (think about that intro to "Red Rain"), and everyone sat up and took notice. Katché has wound up working with all kinds of people since (predictably, Joni Mitchell, Sting, Robbie Robertson, but also... Joe Satriani), expanding his own palette and sound along the way. These days, as both leader and sideman, he's making some excellently atmospheric ECM Eurojazz.

This stylish clip functions as both music video and "making of"-- if you want to just hear the track, skip ahead to 3:03.
