We've come a long way since Paul Simon's Graceland… There are so many amazing African artists infused with Western music and Western artists infused with African music.

The Barr Brothers - Half Crazy
Don MacKinnon

Tenacious Offspring of North African desert music

This new song from my beloved Barr Brothers was posted in Song of the Day by Pamela earlier this summer - but now there's this video, which is actually methinks worthy of *BEST-MUSIC-VIDEOS-EVER. Let me know if you agree. The shots of quivering harp strings are amazing. These guys come by their African blues influences authentically - their father was a dentist in Providence and treated visiting musicians from West Africa who then tutored his sons as a form of thanks. And as Pamela quoted Brad Barr saying “This song could be described as the tenacious offspring of the North African desert music of Mali/Morocco and the sweat and electricity of the Chicago and Mississippi Delta blues... On this track, we wired the harp through a dirty little amplifier. I played my early 40’s Oahu lap-steel. Andrew uses a loping high-hat feel, and the electric bass pushes the whole thing. The lyrics got a nudge from our friend Nathan Moore – we’re all half-crazy, half clear as a bell.”
