Eels - Elizabeth on the bathroom floor
His Sister Elisabeth
This spare haunting tune is about finding his sister on the bathroom floor after her penultimate suicide attempt, the last was successful. The lyrics are composed from his deceased sister's final diary entries.
The family weighs heavy on multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, (more commonly known as E) son of famous physicist Hugh Everett III. This song comes from his second album Electro-Shock Blues was written largely in response to his sister's suicide and his mother's terminal lung cancer. Many of the songs deal with their decline, his response to loss and coming to terms with suddenly becoming the only living member of his family (his father having died of a heart attack in 1982; Everett, then 19 years old, was the first to discover his body). Sigh.
