Long before Aha, and just moments before MTV, Tom Waits made one of the most advanced, prescient music videos of its time. We now take body/motion capture for granted (green screen, green suits, white balls), but Tom was "rotoscoped" performing this song - as was the woman dancing beside him. From what I understand, the motion was captured and then artists created cels by hand for the animation. Just read this Paste article
about the process and a new kickstarted campaign to restore the film and the rotoscope itself.
