Ancient Greek Victor Statues
In his lecture, "Muscle into Bronze: Athletics, Athletes, and Athletic Victor Statues in the Hellenistic Aegean," Andrew Stewart, professor of ancient Mediterranean art at U.C. Berkeley, traces the origins and development of Greek victor statues from the 6th century to the Hellenistic period. Introducing the settings for athletic contests and for the statues, and remarking on the Greek practice of exercising in the nude, Stewart also explains how the statues blend tradition and innovation.
Offered in conjunction with the exhibition “Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World” (July 28–November 1, 2015).
Recorded at the Getty Center on October 25, 2015.
