Much like the first impression of a person, the first line of a book can tell you almost everything you need to know about your imminent literary journey. What novels have captivated you with a single sentence?

Richard Dawkins - Unweaving the Rainbow

I haven't read Richard Dawkins's "Unweaving the Rainbow," but that killer (no pun intended) first line is enough to make me want to. Dawkins turns science into poetry-- for those of us thrilled by that kind of thing-- firmly grasping large, cosmological concepts in order to bring them back down to Earth.
