Much like the first impression of a person, the first line of a book can tell you almost everything you need to know about your imminent literary journey. What novels have captivated you with a single sentence?

From Play it As it Lays by Joan Didion. This is a fantastic first line, and the joy in the interviewer's voice when Didion explains how she thought of it, something she had told no one else before, is one of the best minutes in interviews I've ever heard.
