If a composer’s music can be faulted for being fun to play and enjoyable to listen to, Francis Poulenc can certainly draw blame. Indeed, he has faced the ire of progressives such as Olivier Messiaen and his co-members of Le Jeune France, who favored a more radically progressive approach. His brand of neoclassicism, and that of his colleagues known as Les Six, was considered too light by Schoenberg and those loyal to the expressionism and surrealism of the Second Viennese School. Poulenc came from a wealthy family that hobnobbed with elite society and the remarkable artistic community of post-World War I Paris. There is an elegant wit, playful satire, harmonic twists and turns, and moments of lush texture juxtaposed with sudden energetic bursts. Listeners can imagine strolling down a Parisian boulevard passing by schoolyards with teasing and chattering children, stopping in at cabarets or bistros, and pausing reflectively by the Seine.
